What is the difference between DDR1 DDR2 & DDR3? - The Complete Idiot's Guide


What is the confusion about RAM?
Most computer users do some research before upgrading their system to know exactly a card combination perfectly matching CPU, motherboard and video to meet your needs. But most of them when it comes to RAM. They just know the size of 1GB RAM, ie, 2 GB or 4 GB, but do not know what this DDR1, DDR2 or DDR3 is all about. So that's why I got an idiot's guide to buying a RAM, it turns out that the selection of the proper DDR variant is a very important factor that determines the general shape of the system will perform, so that every user of computer must be well advised to learn that.

DDR1 Specifications

You will find that most un-buffered DIMMs, these days can only be installed on a motherboard for up to 1 GB x 4. Registered Buffered DIMMs or do not have these limitations and server boards up to 8 x 1 GB, 16 x 1 GB or more. An interesting and largely unknown un-buffered DDR DIMM is that they are able to operate one clock cycle faster than the FB-DIMM.

DDR2 specifications
DDR2 memory is the second generation of DDR memory. DDR2 begins with a speed level of 400MHz as the lowest available, while the 400MHz speed is actually the highest speed for DDR1. Therefore, DDR2 picks up where DDR1 leaves. It's a bit strange, but due to different latencies a 400MHz DDR1 will outperform a 400MHz DDR2, but the advantage returns to DDR2 as soon as the speed reaches 532MHz next step, which DDR1 can not reach.

DDR3 Specifications
DDR3 is the third generation of DDR memory. DDR3 begins with a lower level of capacity of 800 Mbps and goes up to 1600Mbps with a bus speed up to 2000MHz. Higher performance with lower power consumption is the greatest benefit, since the operating voltage is only 1.5 V for DDR3 as compared with 1.8 V for DDR2. Reduce the heat is generated, which means that systems run cooler. In short, the new technology will lead to higher capacity modules: up to 8 GB Module (use 4GB chips) to help lower the server / workstation system costs.

Now it will be difficult to list down RAM that best suits what the motherboard. Before buying the RAM you should investigate the recommendations of the manufacturer of the CPU RAM and fit that exact type of DDR in it. You would be so foolish in the use of a PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 with an AMD Sempron 2800 + as it would be to load the Intel QX6800 with a PC1600 DDR-200. Each combo CPU / chipset has its own set of DDR, and you should know exactly what they are and stick to them. If fir a slower rate than recommended DDR to your system RAM end critical functions and could slow down your system.

Just replaced my 2 month old 15 "MacBook Pro with the new model launched i7 few days ago. So my dad was not compatible 8GB more. Only 5 months ago that the style of more expensive memory just did not last three times what it cost new RAM.

I have installed without any problem on the laptop, I started very well, works well.

Best price I found, I can not believe how cheap that I have this new laptop up to 8GB.

Edit - worked very well in my new Mac Mini 2011 and now has 8 GB.
